IELTS Writing Task 1 often challenges students to describe visual data clearly and accurately. Whether it’s a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, or table, mastering the skills to describe trends and comparisons is essential for scoring well. In this blog, we’ll help you build confidence in approaching Task 1 with structure, clarity, and useful vocabulary.

What is IELTS Writing Task 1?

In Task 1 of the IELTS Academic Writing test, you’re given a visual (graph, chart, table, or process diagram) and asked to summarize the information, describe key features, and make comparisons where relevant. You need to write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes

Common Types of Visuals

You might see:

  • Line graphs – Show trends over time
  • Bar charts – Compare categories or groups
  • Pie charts – Show proportions and percentages
  • Tables – Present numerical data in rows and columns
  • Maps or diagrams – Show changes in locations or processes

Each type requires a different approach, but all need clear descriptions and comparisons.

Key Language for Describing Trends

Here are some useful phrases to boost your vocabulary:

📈 For increases:

  • rose sharply, increased steadily, experienced a gradual rise

📉 For decreases:

  • declined significantly, dropped slightly, fell rapidly

🔁 For stability or no change:

  • remained constant, showed no significant change, stabilized

🔃 For comparisons:

  • was higher than, compared to, in contrast with, similarly

📅 Time-related phrases:

  • between 2010 and 2020, over a ten-year period, from January to March

Structure for a High-Scoring Response

Follow this 4-part structure:

  1. Introduction – Paraphrase the task question.
  1. Overview – Summarize the main trends or features.
  1. Body Paragraph 1 – Describe the first half of the data in detail.
  1. Body Paragraph 2 – Describe the remaining data and comparisons.

Make sure your writing is cohesive and uses a range of sentence structures

Common Mistakes to Avoid

🚫 Copying the task description without paraphrasing
🚫 Giving personal opinions (Task 1 is factual only!)
🚫 Describing every single number instead of summarizing trends
🚫 Mixing up tenses (use past tense for past data)
🚫 Using informal or repetitive vocabulary
